Floods in Layham

Every few years we get a really wet period and this year was no exception. Layham and Hadleigh don't suffer too badly as far as property damage goes, however, a few people get a bit of a scare. as these first two images from Layham show.



This is the Granary in Layham. Built on piles but these are under water here.



These two images are of the area in front of the Council Offices. Normally I follow a footpath across here, but not today!


The Rugby Club grounds in Hadleigh, as you seldom see them.

John Betjeman once said:   “Hadleigh is one of the most perfect small towns in England, with trees, old red brick, flint and plaster and that unassuming beauty of East Anglia, which changes to glory in sunlight.” There are around 246 listed buildings in Hadleigh, which by any standard is amazing for a small town like ours. This is a photographic record of a few of them, with the `Listing Text` for each building coming from Historic England. Unfortunately large numbers have been refronted, especially in the C18-19, the plaster and brick walls hiding much medieval timber framing. The preservation of so many mediaeval and Tudor buildings is due to the poverty that struck the town after the collapse of the wool trade in the 16th century: the inhabitants could not afford to knock down or renovate in accordance with the fashions of the time. Loch Spelve and otters

Located in the south-eastern ‘corner’ of Mull, Loch Spelve is a large tidal body of water bounded by an unclassified single track road which branches off at its western end with one track running back along the southern shores of the loch to Croggan and the main track running west to Loch Buie. Being just south of where we were staying, it looked a great place to explore. Definitely an `unclassified single track road`!  We had read of the otters being seen here. On arriving to park, we were cruising along the Loch side when we spotted a woman, loaded with camera gear coming toward us. On speaking to her, it transpired that she and her husband (both keen photographers), were in the area photographing otters. Soon afterwards she caught our attention and we followed her along the loch as an otter went about his business on the loch side. Playford and the two famous men who lived there.

Today was divided between Playford Church, one which I had never visited, and a revisit to St Mary at Capel St Mary to bring up to date my record of this local church. So firstly, a drive to Playford, a small village just north of Ipswich. On the outside initial impressions are that nothing stands out. Then I noticed that it had a south tower, as opposed to the normal West. However, there are a few in Suffolk apparently. Shelley, near home, has a North tower! An interior view, with the lovely east window. The east window is a triple-lancet design, meaning it features three narrow, pointed arches. T his memorial obelisk in the churchyard was erected in 1857 to commemorate Sir Thomas Clarkson of Playford Hall (died 1846). Clarkson, who lived at Playford Hall in the latter years of his life, was instrumental with William Wilberforce in the abolition of slavery. Clarkson is said to have thought out his opposition to slavery while riding from Cambridge to London in the summer of 1785. H...
